Carol - Left over from last night - I'm betting that the Crows have a chick that has fledged and it is there on the ground somewhere. The extra crows you are seeing are probably immediate members of this Crow flock. Sometimes the fledgeling will spend up to two weeks on the ground before they are finally fully able to fly and take care of themselves. The parents and last year's chicks will continue to provide protection as long as necessary. The chicks manage to stay very well hidden and can usually fly just enough to get up into a bush or small tree to hide. They're not like humans and their nest has no attachment for them once they have fledged and the chicks won't go back to it. They're actually safer away from the nest because they can do a much better job of hiding from predators. Just from the actions of these four Crows, you might be able to figure out where the chick is hiding and try to stay away from it.

Carol - I had completely overlooked this possibility up to now but there is a strong likelyhood that there may be more than one fledged chick since the females usually lay up to 7 eggs per nesting. So, to take it further, you could have seven baby crows(or less)either in the nest or on the ground. The chicks will not band together but the flock will know exactly where each one is. Good Luck and watch where you walk!

Well here we are at noon and we've hit 90. I can't wait to see what the rest of the day brings.

Stay cool

Carl...good points on the crows!! I am sure that is what happened. I didn't realize that the babies would be on the ground somewhere, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks! Next walk, I'll take a slightly different route. That is most likely why the crows follow Joe too...he said they are still at it but not dive-bombing him so maybe he didn't get as close to the little ones as I did.

Mariposa - Is that a humid, hot, sticky 90 or is it civilized!!!? Let's see...the hottest part of your day should be right about quitting time? Just in time for a brewski & the shade of a cool tree. We're going to be far short of those numbers here in the swamp. It's almost noon and we havent hit 70 yet. I can live with that... no problema!

I'm thinkin' of making a quick run to Las Vegas to check up on Auntie Em. She hasn't been "fussing" much lately and that's enough to make me wonder. I'm thinkin' just a Saturday down & Sunday back so I don't have to acclimate to the heat.

Carl the humidity has been steadily increasing all day. It wasn't too bad in the warehouse until about 2:00 the it felt like I was in a roaster. We tied a record high of 102 today. I can handle the brewski but no trees in the yard so I am staying inside.

Carol - One other thought on the Crows: By now the babies will be almost full sized and could be very difficult to identify as babies. Their feathers will not be fully developed yet but you probably won't be able to see that. They will be acting subservient and subordinate to any any adult crows near them. They are still cute to watch at this stage.

Mariposa - I know I couldn't handle 102... especially if it was at 95% humidity.

Carl the humidity got higher as the day went on, tomorrow will be worse than today. It won't drop below 90 until midnight so it will start out hot in the morning. At least it will be Friday.

Carol - The Blazers got a shooter in Damian Lillard. He could be as good as B.R. but with better knees.

Carol - I'll hold off judgement on Meyers Leonard for now. He sounds articulate & intelligent & moves a lot better than Baby Huey but he's got that damn split between his two front teeth.

Carl, thanks again for the crow info, you are veritable fountain of knowledge. I love learning about the creatures around here.

Didn't know about the Blazer picks but Lillard sure sounds promising.
As to Meyers he doesn't shoot the ball with his teeth-LOL...hey what the hell, that split is working for Letterman!

Mr. Ed said...

Baby Huey had it TOO!

carol said...

Oooohhh, I didn't know that! or forgot about it since it's been so long since I've seen his happy (not) face. :)

Carol - The thing that impressed me with this draft is that the Blazers didn't get involved with any trades.
