Carol - The blossoms haven't been totally destroyed by the rain and they are a unique color. The foliage also is different. I know I have never seen one like it. :o)
Holy Hump Day! It's Wednesday... ALREADY!!! Where's this week gettin' off to ? Have a great day all.
I might be able to get out in the flower beds and clean up the 'spent' bluebells..drat those things! I have been remiss in the back yard, had to get the front done first and it's hard to do in between showers and hard rain. Still waiting for a few nice days in a row so the porch can get re-stained and sealed.
Carol I have a few of those iris also. I like the fact they give some extra color variation after they have bloomed.
Mariposa, do yours smell like grapes?
Do you know the name of the variety?
Carol I've never really sniffed them so that will have to wait until next year. All I know is that were called a variegated iris when I bought them. I don't recall any name on the pot.
Carol - I can't tell from the pic but what does the blossom look like in its throat? Is it yellowish with ribs or is it just a lighter lavender? My Master Gardener friend looked at the pic & she said it could be any of several Iris varieties depending on how the throat & tongue look. Can you open its mouth and make it say "AHHHHH"?
More from my M.G. friend: She says she thinks it is a Dalmation Iris based on the variegation of the leaves and the grape smell. The name comes from the area of The Dalmation Coast in the former Yugoslavia. To further fine-tune that, she said it is probably "Iris Pallida"(she spellled it for me) again based on the grape smell. The fact that the leaves don't have a "buttery" coloration helped her narrow it down quite a bit more as to where it originated. It's wonderful to have a "smart" gardener buddy! :o)
Carl, thanks so very much to you and your Master gardener!!! There is no coloration in the throat. Just a lovely pale lavender color throughout.
Well, the Jr Rose Festival parade is once again history, but boy does it snarl traffic!! Thankfully it is only once a year. I had quite a time getting to my shuffleboard game this afternoon...but managed to sneak around most of the mess.
Carol - The lavender throat clinched it! She said she was certain that it is exactly what she said it was. :o)
