Today's cover shot: The squirrels here in the swamp don't hibernate. They are less active during the winter and they definitely sleep a lot more but they need to keep their fat layers to keep warm. I always keep the feeders full of black oiled sunflower seeds when it turns winterish. A couple of years ago, I live trapped and moved 37 squirrels to new locations. There are lots of parks and campgrounds with people who love to feed the squirrels and, my population was totally out of hand!

Hoo doggies!!! TGIF!!! Have a great Friday!

Squirrels are cuties and there are a LOT of them around the neighborhood. We don't feed them. Cars seem to keep the population under control and it give those obnoxious crows something to eat (and crow about). They are the ones that need to be thinned out. Their 'calls' deafen everyone each morning, especially when they gather in a tree by the hundreds.

AHHHH Friday, wait I've been off all week, I've had a week of Fridays. Rain in the forecast for tonight with fall like weather for the rest of the weekend.

Carol - Flocks of crows are exclusively family groups so that must be one BIG family if there are that many. There must be a really GOOD food supply.

Mariposa - It sounds like we're on the same weather page. Fall-like wet & blustery is the forecast. I'm looking forward to the first frost so I can start planting trees.

I had to take Oscar to the Vet yesterday. Poor guy has a really bad sinus infection. The fun part now is getting the antibiotics down him twice a day.

Mr Ed... I don't know if it is a large family but the sky is often times FILLED with crows gathering in one tree, usually a very tall D.Fir. We watch them come in from all over. They will circle the tree, land in it, fly away, come back. The longer it goes on, more and more crows show up. It's like they are sending out an S.O.S.
This can happen any time of day so it's not their evening roosting regimen. This happens in every neighborhood we've been in. I know about the family patterns in crows, but this seems to be a gathering of many for a reason, maybe to ward off a predator.

Our weather was beautiful all day but now at 3:10, it's breaking down, clouds have moved in and the wind has picked up...sure sign of rain.
Oh well, we do need some moisture.

Well, they say with our weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change. It took 35 minutes but the sun is back out and the clouds are gone.

Crows have really extended families... aunts & uncles & so on. Don't ask me how they can tell but they will attack and drive off any non-family intruder. It's not uncommon to see two and three year olds taking care of new siblings. Young females have no problem getting accepted into a new flock as a male's mate but it just doesn't work in reverse. They are VERY territorial and do not play well with outsiders. If you want to see a fight to the death, let a Raven show up. You probably do have a large extended family there and for some reason they aren't splitting off and making new flocks. That reason probably is food! As long as an area can support them, there's no reason to divide. Normally, departing females is enough to keep the overall size down. And, newly mated pairs will break off and start a new flock in a different area.

Carol - I've still got some sun and low 70s but there's a lot of clouds coming in. Oops! The temp just dropped five degrees. Oh well, the deer and fish are fed so for whatever's coming - bring it on! All I have to do is get out for the usual Friday night dinner & drinks with friends!
