Today's cover shot: One of my closest friends. I started out feeding her trail mix but I just carry peanuts for her now... unsalted of course!

I love working with critters to gain their trust. This little girl will take peanuts from my hand and she has learned to come to me when I show up. I'm not trying to make her "tame"... just not afraid of me. It takes a lot of time and patience but eventually they come around!

Oh, that little squirrel is soooo cute!!
There were 2 squirrels in a park near us that would take peanuts out of a lady's hand. She had worked with them for quite a while she said. I don't know if they would take peanuts from anyone else, but I wished I had had some to offer.
We put peanuts in a feeder on our back fence years ago, but it got to be tooo tiresome to keep filling it and the squirrels would bury a lot of the peanuts so in time, we had them sprout up in the strangest places. Also other creatures would come for them.
Carol - One of my "rules" is that she has to eat the peanut & not take it away. If she leaves, no further peanuts. That has been the hardest to teach. Since I adopted the five feral outside cats, I don't do any backyard feeding of birds or small critters.
Yes, I would imagine the feral cats would just love for you to entice lots of birdies to your yard!! Yum, lunch is served!! :)
Carol - So far the outside cats have only gotten one bird that I know of. It was a robin and they're not attracted to bird feeders. One small tabby I call Timmy, is a great hunter & has caught about two dozen mice and moles... and a couple of baby rats. He always brings his "prize" home and puts it next to their dry-food dish. Apparently he prefers the manufactured dinners over natural fiber. I can't blame them for doing what is natural to them. Before I took them in, what they caught was all they had to keep them alive but I am not going to provide them with a gourmet smorgasbord to feast on. I think Timmy is now the only one that still hunts. He is the youngest.
