Carol - A couple of my friends were talking about Deschutes Brewery a couple of weeks ago. They had tried the Black Butte Porter but said they preferred the Obsidian Stout. Their comment was that the Obsidian had more of the chocolate flavor but without the upfront bite of the Black Butte. I haven't tried either... I'm normally not a dark beer fan.
Mr Ed, I saw the Obsidian Stout in the store, but thought 'stout' meant bitter. I'll have to try that. The "bite" of the other one is barely noticeable. I'll give the Obsidian a try and let you know. This is the first dark beer I've had so the selection in the store was a wild guess, and I got lucky. :)
Carol - No recommendations since I haven't tried either one. When I drink beer it is usually a bottled domestic... with tomato juice. I don't like the taste of any beer from a can. The metallic taste seems to bleed into the beer.
Mr. Ed, I prefer bottled beer too, but with the canned beer, I pour it into a glass or stick a straw in the can as I hate to drink out of a can, don't like the feel of it on my lips.
As to the BB Obsidian Stout, your friends must have a way different pallet than I do as I just had a swig of it and it's very BITTER. Also I didn't even taste the chocolate!
