Wow! Here we are at Saturday and this month's half shot already!
Today's cover shot: One of the most brave of my flock of protectors. I don't know how many crows there are in my flock but I think it's between 50 and 100.... all one big family. Several of them come when I call and every morning I feed a breakfast treat to the ones that do. They also have access to the corn I put out but mostly they feed on tons of bugs and beetles. Native lore regarded the Crow as an omen of good luck in things to come. Of all the birds I have here in the swamp, the Crow is the smartest and is capable of reasoning out solutions to problems. When I feed them their breakfast treat, several of them reciprocate my offering by placing stones at the dish and I always make it a point to pick up those stones. Sometimes they leave me something shiny or perhaps a bottle cap they have found. I love interfacing with wildlife. They are so much FUN!
Carol - Here is Rogue's web site with a full listing of all their offerings. Rogue Beers Like I said, I've had several... Skull Splitter, Dead Guy and a couple of others and I liked what I tried. The Voodoo Doughnut looks like Pepto Bismal but I've never tasted it. I am a card-carrying member of Rogue Nation and I've been to their brewery on the coast several times. I understand they also have an outlet/brewery in Portland but I've never been there.
Mr Ed, thanks for the info on RR beers. I was going along with the chocolate/raspberry until I saw the pretzel part....sounds yukky to me. I do love pretzels, just not with the other two tastes.
Loved your story about the crows who bring you gifts - we have a large family in our neighborhood. I love how they post 'sentries' on wires or branches above the street so they can guard the ones who are feeding on the lawns.
Have you ever been to Voodoo Doughnut? I never have, I hear there are lines out the door on any given day.
Carol - I don't know about the pretzel part... how it blends in. It might just be an intangible side flavor... kinda salty. I dunno!
Side-bar on the crows: They definitely are not afraid of me & I think with a little work I could have one or two that would take food from my hand. Two of them have come very close to landing on my shoulder but veered off to a nearby branch at the last second. They definitely are very SMART and more than a little cautious!
Carol - And where is Voodoo Doughnut? If I go for doughnuts or pastry products I go to Joe's in Sandy. I've tried a lot of others but I haven't found any that can compare! It's just a little hole-in-the-wall shop on the way to Mt. Hood but they are GOOOOOOOD! I love their raspberry bear-claw. Their apple-spice muffins and their Bismarks are to-die for! And, just a plain old maple bar or a glazed donut is a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Damn! I made myself hungry for Joe's!!!!
Mr Ed, Voodoo Doughnut is at 22 SW 3rd. They get rave revues. If I ate that type of thing, I'd be in line just to see what all the excitement is about.
Carol - You lost me at SW3rd in Portland. They would have to be giving away gold ingots with every purchase to get me there. There are some things I just DON'T do and downtown Portland is at the TOP of the list!
Mr Ed, I hear you on downtown - I really would not venture down there, esp in that part of it. Not a good area at all. I always wondered why they chose that location.
Carol - My list of negatives about Portland is soooooooooooooo long! The traffic is bad enough but the parking is ABYSMAL.... not to mention dreadful, awful, terrible, frightful, atrocious, disgraceful, deplorable, shameful, hopeless, lamentable and just plain extremely bad!!!! Am I prattling again?
