It's good to see that the 36 Pit fire hasn't grown in size since yesterday but it's still not under control. I'm holding my breath that we don't get any east winds in the next few days because it could get real UGLY real quick.
After watching the state and federal efforts on this fire the past couple of days I'm just glad that I have made my properties as fire safe as I have. But, I think I need to do a lot more because they just aren't getting the job done on this fire. From what I'm seeing, they've turned this into a 'controlled burn' that is no where close to being controlled. If I have a fire like this in my neighborhood, I won't have a tree standing after the first day if I rely on their response. I already have fire breaks around all my properties but it's becoming obvious that they need to be better! And, that has to be the number one priority if I'm going to continue growing trees!
Carol - I'm ten miles from it and completely safe. I just don't understand why they are, pardon the expression, "screwing around" with this fire. They COULD have had it OUT at 50 acres and now it's at 2500 and still uncontrolled or even CONTAINED! Now they're saying it could be mid October before it's even contained. It doesn't surprise me that it has jumped 224. It burned the guardrails in one section yesterday and has been burning right alongside the highway for two days. That's why 224 has been closed for five miles either side of MP 36! They have twenty tankers, two water dropping helicopters(one large twin rotor & one medium size), two bulldozers and still only 100 men on the ground. It's all being run by the Feds(Mt. Hood N.F. & BLM) & they seem to have a "know-it-all you can't tell me anything" attitude. They apparently have been trying to keep it contained between the Clackamas River and hwy 224 (and out of their beloved RV campgrounds) and you can see how well that's working for them. Stupid and inept seem to be the descriptive words for this fire fight.
Carol - The reason I'm completely safe is the Clackamas River. The fire would have to jump the river and that won't happen unless the winds really pick up and shift to the east.
36 Pit fire is now listed at 3600 acres and growing and they have closed Hwy 224 for ten miles either side of MP 36. So far they've only been able to contain it on one side with a limited backburn and it has burned on both sides of 224. One good note is there now are 40 state & local water carrying fire trucks on the fire... twice the number that were working on it his morning. It's too bad our esteemed governor didn't get off his butt and get the state more involved two days ago. I guess you have to burn the house down to get his attention. Ummmmm... No, I'm NOT a fan!
The 36 Pit fire did the unthinkable & jumped the Clackamas River today but thankfully, the wind was blowing in a favorable direction and it was headed away from my area. The crews jumped on it and knocked it down at only 55 acres. I’ll sure be glad when they get the miserable thing OUT.

Mr.Ed, I just heard that the fire jumped Hwy 224. Stay as safe as you can.
Is there any risk to you yet? Are you ready to evacuate if necessary?
At least the winds will be from the South and it's cooler with less wind.
