Carol - No, the slide is in the 36 Pit fire area east of Estacada. It's about eight miles out on the route to Detroit Lake. They were expecting it. The fire burned off all the vegetation and now there's nothing to hold everything in place. Rocks started coming down on the highway even before they got the fire out. Except for the few people who live out there, there's very little traffic on that highway most of the time and it's often closed in winter. Anyway, it's at least a dozen miles away & the wrong direction to cause me any problems. Thanks for asking. By the way, that reminds me that I still have a couple of stray bears(and who knows what other strays) to send back over there!
How far are these bears from your house? I would be very concerned to know such large critters are prowling close to me. Good thing your cats are all inside. Speaking of cats, how are they all doing? How's Joey (hope I got his name right- the one the others are afraid of) Are the others still avoiding him?
Carol - Joey is doing great & he actually is able to just disregard the other cats most of the time. Going the other direction is the tough part because they can't seem to get past the fact that Joey is different. At least he won't go after them now but it's obvious that if someone starts something, Joey wouldn't hesitate to finish it.
The bears aren't a problem because there's no food near my house so there's nothing to attract them. I just have to be cautious when I'm out away from the house where I might stumble onto them accidentally. Knowing they're out there isn't a problem but now I always have a loaded weapon just in case. I've only seen one recently so the others have probably moved on. Frankly, I don't worry too much about critters. Of all of them, Cougars make me the most cautious. They are very stealthy and can be watching you from twenty feet away and you'll never see them unless they want to be seen. Bears are big and noisy and sneaking up on something is the farthest thing from their very small mind. Bears don't have a reputation for attacking people because they have learned that humans are a threat and to be avoided if possible. They will stand their ground if surprised but they won't stalk you. The exception to that is a mama with cubs. I'm hoping that if I have a female, she goes elsewhere to hibernate so I don't have to deal with that threat in the spring.
Bears are no threat to the outside cats. Unless one of them was injured, there's no way a bear could catch it.
Carol - One other comment about the critters - I have six game cameras set up and they haven't caught anything except deer and coyotes for several weeks. Also, I haven't seen where they've been tearing rotten stumps apart looking for termites & bugs. I seriously think the bears were just passing through and have moved on.
Carol - I actually have seven outside cats... all strays & semi-feral. They're not really mine but I feed them all & provide places they can get in out of the weather. I can actually pet four of them now and one comes inside sometimes so we're making progress.

Mariposa, I sure hope you have wine/beer and very good earplugs. Or a 5th of something, then you won't care about the noise level. LOL
Mr Ed. thanks for the info. Good to know you are safe, and good to know the kitties are all doing well.
