Going back a couple of days: From what you said, my Peonies must be trees. They have a woody plant structure that remains above ground during the winter and the new growth comes onto that existing stemwork in the spring. Mine definitely do not come up from bulbs every year. I've never talked with my MG friend about them but I've always thought they were just bushes because they only get to about five feet tall. But, when they bloom they smell fabulous and they really attract the Hummingbirds and butterflies
My favorite peony is the one I have that was mom's. It's lavender, and its been around for better than 50 years. It is the one that blooms first and smells so good.

Lavender must be really pretty. Mine are different shades of pink.
