Today's cover shot: One of the really big guys in the herd. This guy will have an antler rack of six to eight points... possibly nine with the eye guards. It is an honor to me to have the complete trust of this guy but it's only part of the equation since I completely trust him as well. I often have to convince him to move out of the feed pans so I can add food for him. He wants to eat right out of the bucket, a practice I try to discourage for my own safety.
I keep telling him to keep his head down during hunting season but he doesn't seem to wander very far from my back yard. Lately I've been seeing him almost daily but that could just be the time of year. He and the other boys are banded together now since it's "baby" time for the does and they would kick his butt if he got too close.
A beautiful day in store for the swamp today with highs touching the upper 80s & possibly 90. Tomorrow we start heading for a warm up with highs forecast in the upper 90s and triple digits by the weekend. If that actually happens it will be the first time since 2012 for a temp over the 100º mark here in the swamp. But, the humidity should be low so it won't be a "killer".... just very warm. Back when I was a tadpole just growin' up here, it was very common for temps to be over 100º right at the end of June/start of July. It often came with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms on a fairly regular basis. Back then you could count on snow by Thanksgiving and definitely a white or very wet Christmas. I don't know if I miss that or if I'm thankful. Something to ponder over lunch.
